Fostering Emotional Resilience
Parenting is a grand adventure, a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and the pure joy of witnessing a little soul blossom into its unique brilliance. It is the art of guiding a child to discover the world while rediscovering it through their innocent eyes, and in doing so, finding the magic in everyday moments. One of the most important tasks of parenthood is helping children learn to deal with their emotions. All children experience periods of stress in their lives and need the emotional skills to deal with it. Children’s emotional resilience, or ability to cope with their feelings, is important to their long-term happiness, wellbeing and success in life.
Emotional resilience refers to the ability to manage feelings and cope with day-to-day stress and major life events. This includes being able to recognise, understand and accept feelings and express them in appropriate ways that do not harm others. It also involves being able to face and resolve unpleasant situations and cope with very stressful and upsetting events.

Children exhibit different temperaments with varying levels of sensitivity and emotions. Whereas some can thrive under the immense pressure of a competitive exam, others may find even a small class test overwhelming. Similarly, some effortlessly adapt to new social settings, while others prefer familiar company. However, it’s essential that all children learn to manage their emotions. Children must learn to navigate a range of emotions, both positively and effectively.
Raising resilient children is all about fostering their capacity to confront life's obstacles with strength and flexibility. This involves nurturing their ability to bounce back from adversity, adapt to challenges, and emerge stronger through difficult situations. Emotionally resilient children develop enhanced empathy, social skills, and emotional management abilities. They learn the importance of being empathetic and sensitive to the needs of others. They learn how to manage emotions and move through negative feelings to feel better again.
Here are a few tips to foster resilience in children:
Build a strong bond: Spend quality time with your child, understand their emotions, and establish a supportive and loving relationship. Offer unconditional love, encourage them, and make them feel supported and secure.
Teach problem-solving skills: Guide your child in solving problems independently by breaking down issues into manageable steps and exploring various solutions together. Teach children how to identify problems, brainstorm solutions, and implement them. Encourage critical thinking and decision-making from a young age.
Encourage a positive mindset: Foster optimism by highlighting your child’s strengths, successes and opportunities rather than dwelling on failures or setbacks. Please encourage them to see challenges as opportunities for learning and growth.
Provide a safe environment for expression: Create a safe space where children feel comfortable expressing their thoughts, feelings, and concerns without fear of being judged. Validate their emotions and offer support and guidance.
Teach emotional regulation: Model healthy stress management techniques and help children find relaxation methods that work for them, such as deep breathing or listening to calming music.
Set realistic expectations: Help children set achievable goals based on their abilities and challenges, avoiding unrealistic expectations that may cause stress.
Model Resilience: Children often learn by example. Demonstrate resilience in your own life by facing challenges with a positive attitude, perseverance, and problem-solving skills.
Promote emotional intelligence: Teach your child how to recognise and express their feelings in healthy ways. Encourage empathy and understanding of others’ emotions.
Encourage autonomy: Foster independence and autonomy by allowing children to take age-appropriate responsibilities and make decisions, providing guidance and support as needed.
Allow them to fail: Failures are the stepping stones of success. They are important for learning and growth. Allow children to experience failure and mistakes, and encourage them to learn from these experiences rather than being discouraged by them.
Here are the traps that parents may fall into, inadvertently encouraging children’s emotional distress:
· Talking excessively about their own feelings and troubles.
· Dwelling on their child’s upsetting experiences.
· Showing excessive interest in how a child feels.
· Overreacting to minor upsets, such as small bumps or bruises.
· Being overly protective or pampering.
· Not allowing children to learn and problem-solve independently.
· Not giving enough attention to coping or courageous behaviour
By embracing these approaches and creating a supportive environment, you can nurture the resilience that will empower the child to flourish amidst life's twists and turns. Remember, cultivating resilience is a journey, and your continuous encouragement and direction are vital every step of the way.
